Kalabo Town Council, through the Department of Health Services, today held a stakeholder engagement meeting to raise awareness on the upcoming Polio Vaccination Campaign, scheduled to run from 20th April to 25th April 2026.
The meeting was convened in response to the recent isolation of a circulating vaccineβderived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in an environmental sample detected in Lusaka District, a development that has necessitated heightened vigilance and preventive measures across the country.
Polio is a highly contagious and dangerous disease that can result in lifelong paralysis of the arms and legs, and in severe cases, death, particularly among young children.
The vaccination campaign will target all children under the age of five (5), who will be vaccinated orally. Vaccination teams will conduct the exercise doorβtoβdoor, as well as in public schools, churches, markets, and other public places, to ensure maximum coverage.
The Department of Health Services has urged parents and guardians to actively participate in the exercise by ensuring that all eligible children are vaccinated. Members of the general public have also been encouraged to promptly report any suspected cases of polio to the nearest health post or health facility within their residential areas.
The Council remains committed to safeguarding public health and working with stakeholders and community members to prevent the spread of preventable diseases.
