Chongwe- Friday 10th April,2026.

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary Dr. Gabriel Pollen has hailed the Marriage Registrar’s Association of Zambia (MRAZ) for upholding integrity and professionalism in the execution of its duties.

Dr. Pollen noted that ensuring marriages are conducted in line with statutory requirements demands a high level of commitment from marriage officers, as they perform this important function on behalf of the Zambian government.

He commended the association for its remarkable achievement of recording over 80,000 marriages across the country in 2025, describing it as a significant milestone.

The PS was speaking during the inaugural MRAZ workshop held in Chalimbana, which ran from 7th to 10th April.

The MRAZ workshop aimed to strengthen capacity and standardize the solemnization of marriages in local authorities and church institutions across the country.

Meanwhile, MRAZ President Mr. Webby Simfumkwe emphasized the importance of capacity building among marriage registrars in both local authorities and church institutions.

He stated that the workshop was organized to strengthen capacity, harmonize existing laws and practices of marriage solemnization and establish a standardized approach to conducting marriages nationwide.

In a vote of thanks, Ms. Beauty Wamuyi a member of the association, invited Dr. Pollen to serve as patron of MRAZ.

She noted that his office is well-positioned to support the association’s future plans, particularly in enhancing capacity and harmonizing marriage solemnization practices.

Dr. Pollen accepted the role and was later conferred with honorary membership in recognition of his commitment to supporting local governance, particularly in the area of marriage registration.
