Kalabo is a District in Western Province of Zambia, situated about 75kms from Mongu the provincial capital of Western province. The district is estimated with a population of about 112,673 and a total surface area of 9,016 km2. It shares district boundaries with Mitete District in the North, Limulunga and Mongu Districts in the East, Nalolo District in the South and Sikongo District in the West. It also shares an international boundary with the Republic of Angola in the North – West.
The district is administratively sub-divided into two (2) constituencies and twenty-four (24) wards. Liuwa Constituency has 10 wards, while Kalabo Central constituency has 14 wards.
Kalabo District experiences a tropical savannah climate characterized by three seasons i.e. hot wet season from November to April, cool dry season (May to June) and hot season (August to October). The average minimum rainfall is about 800mm per year. The average maximum temperature is about 37 degrees centigrade. The average minimum temperature is about 5.6 degrees centigrade. Night frost occurs frequently in June.
The economic mainstream of the district include; Agriculture due to its fertile arable land, and adequate ground and surface water such as rivers, lakes and waterfalls. Tourism is thriving in the district because of the Liuwa National Park that is situated 35kms away from Klabo Boma. Fishing and livestock rearing also make part of the main economic activities of the district. The district produces rice, maize, cassava, cashew nuts, mangoes, citrus fruits, fish, cattle, timber and honey. With the construction of the Mongu – Kalabo road, the district is open to various markets including Angola, Namibia and Botswana on the west and the entire Country.
