The District

Kalabo is a District in Western Province of Zambia with a total surface area of 17,845 km2. It shares district boundaries with Mitete District in the North, Limulunga and Mongu Districts in the East, Nalolo District in the South and Sikongo District in the West. It also shares an international boundary with the Republic of Angola in the North – West

The district is administratively sub-divided into two (2) constituencies and twenty-four (24) wards. Liuwa Constituency has 10 wards, while Kalabo Central constituency has 14 wards.

Kalabo District experiences a tropical savannah climate characterised by three seasons i.e. hot wet season from November to April, cool dry season (May to June) and hot season (August to October). The average minimum rainfall is about 800mm per year. The average maximum temperature is about 37 degrees centigrade. The average minimum temperature is about 5.6 degrees centigrade. Night frost occurs frequently in June.

Agriculture, fishing and livestock rearing are the main economic activities. The District produces rice, maize, cassava, cashew nuts, mangoes, citrus fruits, fish, cattle, timber and honey.

It is well connected to the road network through the, Mongu-Kalabo-Angola boarder.  It is also ideal for marine transport development due to the vast water resources. The District has fertile arable land, and adequate ground and surface water such as rivers, lakes and waterfalls. It is endowed with good pasture for livestock and with prospects for minerals exploration.
